Celebrating a long standing legacy of service

Teams meeting screen with SBA leadership

On Thursday September 29, 2022 the Cleveland District Office and Office of Field Operations celebrated the long standing legacy of District Director Gil Goldberg as he embarks on his next journey. Surrounded by longstanding and new staff, District Director Goldberg was presented with the dedication of the District Office conference room in his honor. He was also honored by SBA Chief of Staff, Arthur Plews.

Gil joined the Small Business Administration in 1994 and served as the guiding force of SBA’s activity throughout northern Ohio.  One of his legacies was the creation of several economic development initiatives that helped transform the region’s economy. Gil always focused his attention on putting the customer first. His bottom-line focus on the customer enabled the District Office to outpace the nation in lending growth repeatedly throughout the duration of his leadership.

Before coming to the SBA, District Director Goldberg spent 20 years in commercial banking, devoting the last decade of this time to middle market and entrepreneurial business development in northern Ohio. He also was Assistant Treasurer for the Leader Mortgage Company in Cleveland, where he was responsible for treasury operations. In addition, he was a Vice President at Chase Bank of Ohio. District Director Goldberg proudly served the U.S. Army in Vietnam.  Gil retires with 30 years of service to the federal government.

National Hispanic Heritage Month

SBA Looks to Help Hispanic-Owned Small Businesses Build on Their Historic Momentum

Over the past decade, no entrepreneurial group has experienced as much growth as Hispanic- and Latino-owned businesses. According to the most recent research from the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative (SLEI), the number of Latino-owned businesses has grown 44% in the last ten years alone. With this level of development, it is no wonder that Latino-owned companies generated $470 billion for the U.S. economy in 2020. That figure only stands to grow: The SLEI projects that there are now approximately 400,000 to 450,000 Latino-owned businesses in the U.S., compared to 350,000 in 2018.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from September 15 to October 15, 2022, is a time to applaud the humbling achievements and immense contributions that Hispanic and Latino American small business owners have made to our nation’s economy. Learn more
