The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) held their 21st Annual Native Hawaiian Convention at the Sheraton Waikiki from July 19th to the 22nd. In his opening remarks, Kuhio Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of CNHA,
spoke about the theme of this year’s event – hulihia – as ‘an overturning that serves as a catalyst for deep, transformative change’.
The Convention kicked off on the 19th with a series of Community Workshops. Topics included: cultural lifestyle practices, training/resources for non-profits, community-driven renewable energy models, digital marketing techniques, Hawaiian genealogy,
film production and the Māhū culture in Hawaiʻi.
The day concluded with CNHA’s KūHana Business Program participants on their feet to deliver their sales pitches to a group of judges.
The morning session on Wednesday included welcoming remarks from former Governor John Waihe’e III and current Governor David Ige. A panel with Puʻuhonua leaders, exploring new paradigms of how Hawaiʻi can address our affordable housing crisis and houselessness,
resonated with Convention attendees. Snippets of conversation, inspired by the panel, were heard in hallways and workshop venues through the end of the event.
The afternoon workshops included topics such as food sovereignty, tourism, access to capital, the housing crisis and Native engagement.
Participants quickly changed into their evening wear to attend the 45th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in the Sheraton’s Ballroom. And the stars were out!
Thursday morning started with a lively panel of Mayors from Hawaiʻi Island, Kauai, Maui and Oahu, discussing their future visions of regenerative tourism.
The next panel included key players of Kapūkakī (Red Hill), discussing the ongoing water crisis and its implications for Honolulu’s future.
The afternoon workshops topics included: Ōʻlelo Hawaiʻi, kupuna, the visitor industry, post-COVID-19 economic recovery and the life of Eddie ʻAikau.
Thursday’s events concluded with Super Debate 2022 – an election candidate forum – in the Ballroom.
The Pop-up Mākeke was open for business during the Convention with a dazzling array of food, fashion, art, books, photography and jewelry.
