Entrepreneur Spotlight: Joshua (Josh) Howard

USA small business administration
SBA Community Advantage Program Announcement

Early Passion for Entrepreneurship

Joshua (Josh) Howard’s journey into entrepreneurship began at a young age. After gaining experience working for various small businesses, he pursued higher education, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Law in 2006. Four years later, he earned his Juris Doctorate and became a licensed attorney in Kentucky in 2011.

From Law Practice to Community Revitalization

Josh, along with his wife, opened a 5-person law practice in his hometown of Pineville, KY. Not stopping there he ventured into property investment, aiming to rehabilitate local properties and foster entrepreneurship. To support these initiatives, he sought assistance from the Kentucky Small Business Development Center (SBDC), an SBA Resource Partner located on the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College campus.

Collaboration with SBDC and KHIC

Working closely with Middlesboro SBDC Director Sam Coleman, Josh developed business plans and explored financing options for his projects. In 2014, he presented his plan to Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation (KHIC), an active SBA lender. KHIC approved an SBA microloan, enabling Josh to realize his vision for the Old City Hall Building in Pineville.

Expanding Success Across Kentucky

Since 2014, Josh has expanded his law practice with offices in Harlan (2016) and Whitesburg, KY (2020). He renovated additional spaces in downtown Pineville for apartments, commercial ventures, and restaurants. Over 11 years, his collaboration with SBDC and KHIC has created over 60 jobs and revitalized numerous communities.

Recognition and Community Involvement

Josh’s entrepreneurial efforts and job creation were recognized in 2020 when he received the title of Rural Small Business of the Year in Kentucky. Despite a busy schedule, Josh remains actively involved in his community, serving on the Kentucky SBDC Advisory Board and contributing to the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky.

Gratitude for SBDC Director Sam Coleman

Reflecting on his journey, Josh expressed gratitude for Sam Coleman, former Middlesboro SBDC Director, stating, “Sam is a true asset and has played a vital role with his assistance and dedication, utilizing all the tools and information that the SBDC has for startups and existing small business expansions in Eastern Kentucky.”
