SBA Program Supports New National Strategy to Reenergize U.S. Travel and Tourism ExportsSpecial Event: Women Veteran-Owned Small Business Initiative

State Trade Expansion Program (STEP)

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently issued a new National Travel and Tourism Strategy that focuses the full efforts of the federal government to promote the U.S. as a premier destination grounded in the breadth and diversity of our communities. A key goal is to foster a travel and tourism sector that drives economic growth, creates good jobs, and bolsters conservation and sustainability. The strategy will help to recover and rebuild a U.S. travel and tourism industry that is more inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and resilient. As the top services export for the U.S. in 2019 prior to the pandemic, travel and tourism generated a $53.4 billion trade surplus and supported one million jobs in the U.S.

The new national strategy highlights how the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) can help tourism-related small businesses access funding to design international marketing products and campaigns; find foreign buyers, including through Department of Commerce’s Commercial Service programs; or adapt their website to attract foreign clients. As SBA’s STEP Director Shadetra Robinson contends, “Tourism is an important U.S. export and driver of economic growth. SBA is proud to support U.S. small businesses that attract foreign visitors to our communities, increasing revenues and supporting employment.” To find out if your U.S. state or territory offers STEP, visit SBA.gov/STEP
